Not only is the city of Inverness itself an exciting destination for a city break, but travelling to it is just as exciting owing to the beautiful scenery that surrounds it, this being the highlands. It has everything else as well such as a rich art and cultural scene as well as a nightlife that will keep you entertained and on your feet till the sun comes up.
Things to see and do in Inverness
Reiterating the history of Britain, Europe and the rest of the world is the New Culloden Visitor Centre, which focuses on the events that took place in Culloden in April 1746. this was when the Jacobite army took on a battle to reclaim Britain and it was the last battle that took place in the country. The visitor centre has all the information on this battle depicted in its many displays.
Urquhart is one of the largest castles in Scotland. The Loch Ness and Great Glen can be viewed perfectly from its tower house and this is a very beautiful sight to admire. There is much the castle exhibits about its history as well as the families who were in possession of it. It is also possible to get an audio-visual display in the recently opened visitor centre where a collection of medieval artefacts has been maintained from the castle.
The Loch Ness can in fact be enjoyed by means of a relaxing cruise. Take on one of the Jacobite cruises which allow you to go right into the water and indulge in the natural beauty of the place.
An even more exciting option is a Dolphin Cruise which involves a close look at bottlenose dolphins as well as seals and porpoises. There is much bird life to see as well with some strange and rare varieties such as terns, red kites and ospreys. The cruise begins at Inverness Harbour and the views are absolutely glorious from here as is some of the wildlife surrounding it.
12 miles to the east of Inverness is Cawdor Castle with its gorgeously wooded grounds that date back to the 14th century and some of the oldest and best Scottish tapestries are maintained here. An interesting fact is that there is a hidden trapdoor in the old tower room which was set up to take intruders down a chute and into a dungeon.
Also remember to watch a show at the Eden Court Theatre which is the largest of its kind in the highlands with its auditorium with a capacity of 850.
